CS6garlWUAEwZrOWhat’s your earliest memory with miniatures?

At first I was watching stop motion animated movies. I liked the rooms, all the places and small things, so I started working in miniatures.

I started working on miniatures in July 2014. I’ve developed my skills quite a bit over the past year, but I don’t sell any of my miniatures.CR2ttKuWwAARme5

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by old rooms.

What is the most memorable miniature you have ever seen?

Rocking chair 1How did you first get started in miniatures?

After a motorcycle accident in 1982, I was unable to work for several months and I needed something to do to pass the time. I always liked putting together the plastic model kits of cars, airplanes, and more. One day, I ran across an article in a magazine for The House of Miniatures kit of the month club. I love woodworking and antiques so I knew this would be something I would like doing. Also, I would be able to have the “antiques” (in miniature) that I couldn’t afford in real life.

How did the idea for Paperholm come about?

h_van_02_700The project came about as a way to keep myself making new work every day. Small paper models seemed like something that I could complete without it taking up too much time. The animations came about by chance really as I’d never made any before starting the project.

Do you save all the miniature paper sculptures you created?

Tell us a bit about your background as an artist.

Free Bee 2 x 2 inchesAs a teenager, I saw an exhibition of free motion machine embroidery on silk, and was intrigued by how the stitched foreground appeared so near and the painted background so distant, making me feel I’d traveled miles while standing on the spot. But a little research on the subject—in books, in those pre-Internet days—left me feeling this was too tricky and time-consuming an art form to learn at the time.

How did you first get started in miniatures?

When I lived in San Francisco, I started collecting unusual dolls on a whim. From there, I discovered the magical world of miniatures… all the accessories, and miniature food! OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMy mother built me two dollhouses and I packed them to the brim. One day, I picked up a couple bars of clay and thought I’d give food making a go. It soon became a total obsession. I’ve since been making miniatures for about twelve years.

What materials do you use to make your miniatures?

A little mania for the mini

Least understood by the masses is my preoccupation with all things miniature. Have a little look around to see the big picture.

In hopes of spreading the good word about a great mini, I launched @dailymini on Instagram in the winter of 2012.

The brand has since been met with great enthusiasm and delight by fellow miniacs. I’m fortunate enough to feature a new miniature each day and am thrilled to share my beloved minis with an international audience. I’m most of all humbled by the community’s response and the amazing range of mini submissions received on a daily basis.
